What an Ophthalmologist Does — and When You Need One
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who completed medical school and a hospital residency in diseases and surgery of the eye. That medical training is the difference that matters when something is actually wrong: an optometrist is the right choice for routine glasses and contact lens prescriptions, but diagnosing and treating eye disease — cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration — and performing eye surgery is the work of an ophthalmologist.
You should see an ophthalmologist if you have blurred vision that glasses don’t fix, you’ve been told you have (or might have) cataracts or glaucoma, you have diabetes and need your yearly dilated retina exam, you’re seeing new floaters or flashes, or a red, painful eye isn’t getting better. Our building sits at 1298 W 7th Street, just south of San Antonio Regional Hospital and moments from the Mountain Avenue exits of both the 10 and 210 freeways — with a free parking lot directly behind the building, so even patients who are dilated or bringing a driver have an easy trip.
Because this is a physician-owned practice rather than a private-equity group, the doctor you meet at your first visit is the doctor who examines you, counsels you, and — if surgery is ever needed — personally operates. Our philosophy is education first: you’ll leave every visit understanding what was found and what your options are, with no pressure toward surgery before it’s genuinely worthwhile. And the whole practice speaks Spanish — both physicians and our entire staff (se habla español).
Meet Your Upland Ophthalmologists
Dr. Marc Shomer, MD, PhD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and cataract surgery specialist. He completed his residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where he teaches cataract surgery to the next generation of eye surgeons.
Dr. Robert Gunzenhauser, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and UCLA fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist, Harvard educated, who performs standard and premium cataract surgery alongside the full range of glaucoma procedures. Glaucoma care is delivered through Inland Glaucoma Center, our dedicated subspecialty division in this same Upland building.

What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who completed medical school and a hospital residency in eye disease and eye surgery; an optometrist (OD) provides primary vision care such as glasses and contact lens exams. For medical eye problems — cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration — or any eye surgery, you want an ophthalmologist. Both of our physicians are board-certified ophthalmologists trained at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

Do I need a referral to see an ophthalmologist?
Usually no — most patients can schedule directly by calling 909-981-9800. Some HMO insurance plans do require a referral from your primary care doctor, so check with your plan; our front office can help you sort out what your insurance needs.
